"In my trouble I cried to the Lord,
And He answered me.
Deliver my soul, O Lord,
from lying lips,
From a deceitful tongue.
What shall be given to you,
and what more shall be done to you,
You deceitful tongue?"
I try to keep my political posts separate from my devotional blog, but being a week away from a presidential election, I think it is easy to see that we are assaulted by lying lips and deceitful tongues. To say otherwise would be a lie. (Sorry, couldn't help that last kidding bit.) There is a chance that a Criminal in Chief will be elected who will be under investigation that will lead to a Constitutional Crisis in ways we've never experienced.
Adam Clarke says, "'Lying lips and from a deceitful tongue,' From a people without faith, without truth, without religion--who sought by lies and calumnies (false and malicious accusation, defame, libel, slander,) 'From lying lips.' Detractions, calumnies, and defamations. 'From a deceitful tongue,' which, under the colour of friendship, covers deceit. A detractor does his mischief openly, a flatterer secretly; so that when a deceitful tongue is joined with lying lips, the mischief is intolerable." Kinda makes you want to take a bath to get the taint off after watching the news.
"You deceitful tongue"
Sharp arrows of the warrior,
compare to James 3:5-6
"See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!
And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity;
the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body,
and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell."
Adam Clarke says, "The Chaldee has, 'The strong sharp arrows are like lightning from above; with coals of juniper kindled in hell beneath...Firing arrows, or arrows wrapped with inflamed combustibles, were formerly used I'm sieges to set the places on fire...
He sets forth the evil that shall fall on such deceivers and slanderers.
1. Arrows--which wound afar off, suddenly and invisibly.
2. Sharp arrows, well-headed, and keen, that can pierce deeply.
3. Sharp arrows of the mighty, shot by a strong hand, and so much the more dangerous.
4. With coals--inflamed arrows, such as set all things on fire.
5. With coals of juniper, which of all coals are the hottest, and keep fire the longest."
Matthew Henry's perspective is this that David was "brought into distress by lying lips and a deceitful tongue. There were those that sought his ruin, and had almost effected it. They flattered him that they might without suspicion carry on their designs against him. They smiled in his face and kissed him, even when they were aiming to smite him under the fifth rib. David was herein a type of Christ, who was distressed by lying lips and deceitful tongues. Having no fence against false tongues, he appealed to Him who has all men's hearts in His hand, and can, when He pleases, bridle their tongues. His prayer was, 'Deliver my soul, O Lord! from lying lips.' He obtained a gracious answer to this prayer. Let liars consider what shall be given to them: God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded. They set God at a distance from them, but from afar his arrows can reach them. They will strike deep into the hardest heart. His wrath is compared to burning coals of juniper, which do not flame or crackle, like thorns under a pot, but have a vehement heat, and keep fire very long even when they seem to be gone out."
Oh, for the days of swift justice, but God is not slow...
Look out! Justice is coming!!!
It might not be determined by an election,
but we have a Supreme Court with only one Supreme Court Justice,
and He says, "Be sure your sins will find you out."
