"Praise the Lord!
Praise the name of the Lord;
Praise Him, O servants of the Lord,
You who stand in the house of the Lord,
In the courts of the house of our God!
Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good;
Sing praises to His name, for it is lovely.
For the Lord has chosen Jacob for Himself,
Israel for His own possession
(special treasure)."
For I know that the Lord is great
And that our Lord is above all gods.
Whatever the Lord pleases, He does..."
(verses 1-6)

Happy Thanksgiving week, praising the Lord!  These praises can be translated, "Hallelujah!"
"Praise ye the name of Jehovah: that is, praise God in His infinite essence, of being, holiness, goodness, and truth...For He is good, Not comparatively, but absolutely good..."
(Adam Clarke)

"The vocal expression of praise by sacred song is one of our greatest delights; we were created for this purpose, and hence it is a great joy to us."

"We are a people near and dear unto Him; precious and honourable in His sight.  How could we refuse our loudest, heartiest, sweetest music?  If we did not extol Him, the stones of the street would cry out against us."
("The Treasury of David")

The whole world revolves around God being good.  Until you accept that, you are in danger of being sucked out of orbit.  That is one of the things we can distinguish Christianity from other religions, that we can trust God because He is good.  He is not a god we must placate, but a God we can rest in. We can praise Him because of who He is even more than for what He does.  We can stand in His house and in His courts praising Him, "for the Lord is good...singing praises to His name, for it is lovely."  "His goodness is His glory, and we must make mention of it to His glory." (Matthew Henry)

Then here is the beautiful nugget.  God has chosen us for His own possession, His special treasure.  We are all chosen. that is election.  Why?  Because "whatever the Lord pleases, He does."  But the flip side of love is that it can not be forced.  It is a choice.  God chooses to set HIs love upon us.  But not all choose Him.  The sad truth is that some reject Him.  They reject His goodness, His loveliness, His greatness, His love.  They reject being chosen, being His treasure.  This is opposite of praising, singing hallelujah to Him who is above all gods.  Instead of singing a  love song as is this Psalm,  they sing a dirge of ingratitude.

The Hebrew word 'scgullah' signifieth God's special jewels, God's secret ones, that He keeps in store for Himself, for His own service and use." (Thomas Brooks)

"For I know that the Lord is great
And that our Lord is above all gods.
Whatever the Lord pleases, He does,
In heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps."
(verses 5-6)

"Be awed by its majesty.  God's way is strewn with crowns and the bones of kings."
(I love this quote!)

"The heathen divided the great domains; but Jupiter doesn't rule in heaven, nor Neptune on the sea, nor Pluto in the lower-regions; Jehovah rules over all...No region is too high, no abyss too deep, no land too distant, no sea too wide for his omnipotence; his divine pleasure travels post over all the realm of nature, and his behests we obeyed.
(Treasury of David)

"Down man, down pope, down devil;
you must yield;
things shall not be as you will,
but as God wills."
William Slater (1704)
